Toyosu & Tsukiji: Checking out Tokyo’s Fish Markets
We check out two of Tokyo’s most famous fish markets. Come with us and see all the amazing food thats on offer!
Toyosu Market (Shijomae Station, on the Yurikamome Line) is now home to the tuna auction. Get there early! The free upper viewing platform is open from 5 AM with the auction taking place between 5:30 AM and 6:30 AM.
The lower platform is closer to the action, but access is only available with a reservation. Head to http://pia.jp/piajp/v/toyosushijou19/ and scroll to the bottom to make a reservation in English. Reservations need to be made at the begin of the month before you visit. i.e. to watch the tuna auction in September, Submit your form in early August.
Tsukiji market (Tsukiji Station, on the Hibiya Line) is the old site of the fish auction, but still has a lot to offer. There is so much great street food! Sushi, sashimi, crab, oyster, ice cream, dried fish, grilled tuna, the list goes on! Come in the morning/lunch time as the stores close early. More stores also open on the weekend.
